Cryptic Studio's released its second Q&A submitted by forum visitors on the official website.
Given that the story and character of Star Trek are almost iconic, how will the story element be delivered? Will there be voiceovers or cut scenes?
Star Trek Online takes place about 30 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis and Star Trek: Voyager, in the year 2409. Many of the characters have retired, passed on or otherwise evolved. Certainly, some characters have very long lifespans, and many will have had children. Expect to see the descendants of some of your favorite characters, old enemies return and friends evolve. And definitely expect to visit familiar locations like Starfleet Academy in San Francisco, Deep Space 9, Qo'noS, Vulcan and many others, as well as strange and entirely new worlds.
How will psi-capable characters be handled (Vulcans, Betazoids, etc.)?
Expect to see some of these abilities represented in Star Trek Online. Some psi abilities are easier to represent than others. For instance, Ocampan or other telekinetic species present obvious gameplay elements. Others are much more challenging and are often simply used as plot... [Click to continue]

» Star Trek Online Prologue! |
|
Aug 29, 2008 - 4:12 PM - by Jaz

2379-2380
Following the death of Praetor Shinzon at the Battle of Bassen Rift, the Romulan government fell into disarray. Tel'aura, one of the few remaining members of the Romulan Senate and a former ally of Shinzon, declares herself the new Praetor, supported by Fleet Commander Tomalak as the new leader of the Imperial Defense Force.

However, Tel'aura's leadership is opposed by Commander Donatra, who with the support of Commander Suran and former Admiral Braeg retains control of the majority of the Fifth and Third fleets. Any hope of a reconciliation between the two sides ends after the execution of Braeg, and Donatra vows never to accept Tel'aura's rule.
Donatra's rebellion is not Tel'aura's only concern. The Remans, led by General Xiomek of the Reman Kepeszuk Battalion, demand control of either a continent on Romulus or a planet with sufficient natural resources to maintain self-sufficient settlements as reparations for hundreds of years of slavery and exploitation. In response, Tel'aura cuts shipments of food and needed supplies to Reman and commands Tomalak to blockade the planet.
In Federation space, the USS Enterprise-E undergoes a major repair and refit and resumes its mission of exploration. About half of her crew transfers to other posts during the months-long overhaul, including senior... [Click to continue]

» Ten Ton Hammer Interview |
|
Aug 26, 2008 - 9:23 PM - by ChessMess
|
The gang at Ten Ton Hammer had a brief sit down with Jack Emmert for a quick Q&A:
Will travel time be an issue? Might it be a mechanic to keep players bunched and promote socialization or to prevent players from venturing too far into the delta quadrant?
Travel times aren’t going to be a problem. You’ll get around pretty quick. We can’t do real time travel, obviously, We’ve got a couple other mechanisms to make sure that players are interacting. Obviously there are going to be starbases and space stations. There will be natural chokepoints because there will be obstacles in space just like anywhere else; places that ships really can’t get through. And so players will be pushed into a corridor, so players will still be running into one another.
You mentioned instancing, how will Star Trek Online make use of non-persistent areas?
Definitely when you go to a certain planet, it’s just you and your teammates beaming down to it.
You can read the full interver here.

Cryptic Studio's released it's first Q&A submitted by forum visitors on the official website.
Will Star Trek Online be considered canon in any respect? How much of the game will stick to the canon?
Al "Captain Geko" Rivera (lead designer): Every series and movie is considered canon, and we are staying very true to this in our development. Star Trek is rich with lore and history, and there is a great deal of material to build upon as we move into the 25th century with Star Trek Online. We are working with CBS to ensure that everything we create is true to Trek and makes sense.
We know that fans want to play Star Trek Online because they want to explore the Star Trek universe, and we are striving to deliver as authentic an experience as possible. Our team has seen all the shows and movies and we're watching them again every single day. We are also studying other soft canon resources such as novels and comics. From those, we are looking for inspiration and references to further enhance our game. Where it makes sense, we will include some soft canon elements in Star Trek Online as well.

|
Aug 22, 2008 - 4:11 PM - by Jaz
|
MMORPG.com has a new QA with Cryptic CCO Jack Emmert; in the video he talks about;
 - Customization of characters, including race creations, skin, eye-brows, hair, antennae.
- Humanoids at launch only.
- Ship exteriors, geometry, colours, decals, ship names, serial numbers.
- Ship interiors, limited to the faction such as Starfleet specification.
- PvP between Klingons and Starfleet, perhaps some war games also.
- 3D movement for ships.
- Ship combat will be tactical, much like tall ship navy combat.
- Ground combat will be fast-paced, more so than common MMO's currently on the market.
The entire video is available on MMORPG.com.
